Why “the honesty of sunshine”?
The title of my blog comes from one of Nathaniel Hawthorne’s romances, The House of the Seven Gables. The character Mr. Holgrave, a daguerreotypist, speaks of photography in this sense: “There is a wonderful insight in Heaven’s broad and simple sunshine. While we give it credit only for depicting the merest surface, it actually brings out the secret character with a truth that no painter would ever venture upon, even could he detect it. There is, at least, no flattery in my humble line of art.” I believe that those are the truest words spoken on the art of photography, and my only hope is that I remain true to the honesty of sunshine.
